Play with Interdisciplinary Concepts Through Open-Ended Challenges

What can my child expect to learn and do in the holiday program?

Your child won’t be acting as an assembly worker who simply follows step-by-step building and coding instructions.

Instead, they will learn useful concepts through application-based tasks that help them see the results of their decisions and understand the cause-and-effect behind the robot’s behaviour. Many of these concepts also support their learning in school.

As they work through the sessions, learners build a clearer understanding of the key elements that make a robot function—both in coding and in selecting suitable components.

To end the 2-day program meaningfully, they will apply the concepts and building techniques they have learned to attempt a short open-ended mission.

What kind of skills will they develop?

Throughout the activities, learners practise thinking through problems step by step. They plan their approach, test their robot, observe the results, and make adjustments to improve its performance.

Learning outcomes:

  • Build a strong foundation in basic coding concepts for accurate robot movement

  • Strengthen number reasoning skills through estimation

  • Apply fractions and convert them into decimals for coding parameters

  • Construct a basic robot by selecting suitable LEGO Technic components and building techniques

  • Attempt a short mission by planning, testing, and refining their solution

  • Experience how interdisciplinary STEM concepts come together in the robot’s performance

  • Develop clear and structured thinking habits when approaching open-ended challenges, forming the foundation for higher-order thinking skills

Spike Essential
Age 7 & 8

Designed for younger learners, our SPIKE Essential Holiday Program builds strong foundations through purposeful, achievable robotics challenges—without step-by-step instructions to follow.

Learners build and program independently, learning to think, explore, and make decisions while working with one main idea at a time, laying a strong foundation for higher-order thinking skills such as logic, analysis, strategic planning, and creative problem-solving.

The missions are intentionally straightforward, allowing learners to focus on understanding movement, control, and cause-and-effect in a clear and manageable way.

Through hands-on exploration, learners sequence coding blocks and apply fractions, decimals, and basic angles to create precise movements, reinforcing both mathematical reasoning and computational thinking.

Each challenge encourages experimentation, reflection, and small adjustments that lead to small wins—helping children build confidence through steady progress in their early STEM learning journey.

Spike Prime Robotics
Age 9+

Designed for upper primary learners (ages 9+), our SPIKE Prime Holiday Program supports learners as they manage multiple ideas and decisions at the same time while applying robotics and coding concepts with greater depth.

Without step-by-step instructions, learners design, build, and program their robots while thinking ahead, planning their approach, and making informed choices, strengthening conceptual understanding, analytical reasoning, and strategic thinking in an age-appropriate way.

Beginning with guided missions, learners progress into open-ended challenges that require them to coordinate several factors—such as structure, movement and coding —at once. Along the way, they apply interdisciplinary concepts, including decimals for fine motor control, geometric reasoning for alignment and turning, and multi-step logic in coding, where planning becomes just as important as testing.

Each challenge encourages experimentation, reflection, and small adjustments that lead to small wins—supporting clearer thinking, steady progress, and growing confidence as learners take on increasingly complex and meaningful open-ended challenges.
